A Bunch of Satellite Dish Lookin’ Stuff
So, they aren't listening to satellite signals, but rather, space itself. Outer space is noisy, and full of various types of radiation. These dishes listen to that. The site is at an elevation of at least 7,000ft above sea level, which puts it a little bit closer to space itself.
There is a vistor center, however this was closed when I passed by it. I took some pictures along the road. There is a railway crossing at this site, not for trains, but for the dishes. Each dish is mounted on a rail, and they can be configured in various patterns to hone in on various...things. I'm really not a radio astronomer, but the people who run this shebang are. Just west of this, you can find a stand of the Cibola National Forest.
