Chihuahuan Desert Nature Park New Mexico

A Simple Park for Desert Education

This is a park run by the Asombro Institute which aims to bring desert education and experiences to people of all ages. The park has left nature alone: while there are some amenities and trails, it is mostly pristine desert wilderness. Wildlife habitat and native plant species are here as far as the eye can see.

It's not terribly far from Las Cruces, but it is far enough that it is very quiet. The road to access the park passes by a school, and is unpaved for the final stretch. It's not a bad drive in at all and doesn't require a high clearnace vehicle. It may be a bit washboarded, I do not remember.

It's a lovely place, and the amphitheatre is very aesthetically pleasing. The colors it is painted with complement the landscape and it has a cool art piece on one of the edges called The Rainkeepers. Thankfully I snapped a photo of that too!

There is an online tour for the interpretaive hiking trail. There's also a nice hill which has great views of the area, where you will be surrounded by various types of cacti. There are some cool looking low mountains near the park, I did not climb up them but maybe that wouldn't be a problem if you choose to do so. I am uncertain if there is anything on or around the property that would be considered trespassing on private land.

I didn't see other people near me when I visited, so if the schools aren't using the park, it's a great place to seek quiet solitude and appreciate the desert, and see some cool signs along the trail that talk about nature.
